If you are getting ready to move into (or out of) the greater Atlanta area, you are going to want to make the most of the money you spend to get it done. Of course, here at Georgia Home Movers we ALWAYS suggest hiring us to handle all of your Atlanta moving needs, because we are the experts you can trust.
Our teams of experienced movers are ready to come in and handle every detail for you, whether you are moving across town or moving out of state. We can pack your belongings with expert care and attention to every detail, giving you the peace of mind that makes a move so much easier.
However, we are well aware that many people want to handle things on their own, and will approach a move with a DIY mentality. And surely, for smaller moves or a move that is not a great distance, handling it all on your own can be a cost saving measure.
If you are considering handling a move on your own, it is a good idea to make sure you are considering all of the following details, at a minimum, to help you make the most of your moving money:
• Distance: The distance of your move is a factor that will directly affect your cost. There is the fuel for any truck(s) needed, so knowing the miles from point A to point B will help you budget accordingly. You also want to be aware of any tolls along your route. Finally, you need to know the laws and regulations surrounding an interstate move, and whether or not they will affect you. Local moves are certainly easier for the DIY approach, but a cross-state move can be handled well if you start with the basics and cover all your bases.
• Size of the Move: This is regarding how many rooms worth of items you will be moving. The difference will determine the size of truck you need, and whether or not it is realistic to do it all in one trip. Again, as with the distance issue, a local move will make this easier on the DIY approach, while moving from Atlanta to another city might be more complicated for you. You don’t want to have a lot of extra space in the truck when you move, for your items will tend to shift and jostle, and could sustain damage. As always, we’d suggest that you simply call Georgia Home Movers and avoid all the issues that the DIY approach carries with it.
• Weight of the Items, and their Size: Are you going to be able to safely move couches, beds, and other large appliances if need be? You will want to ensure you have tie-down straps and an appliance dolly to help you avoid injury. Be aware of any staircases, hallways and sharp turns you will encounter on both the loading and unloading portion of the move, as this will be something to work out in advance. Know that mastering your weight and size of the moved items is often one of the hardest parts of any move to manage.
• Help: Do you have enough power and strength to handle everything in your move? Do you have a really strong back? Family and friends may be able to offer some help, but you may also have to consider hiring some temporary laborers to move bigger, heavier items. It is usually possible to hire temp workers in Atlanta and in your destination town to assist you as you load and unload your truck. But realize this is an additional cost to add to the bottom line of your move, and you might be entrusting strangers on each side to handle your most treasured possessions. If you decide to use Georgia Home Movers, we have the same team used to load and unload your items, and our workers are professionals with the experience you need in every situation.
• Insurance: You will want to double-check and make sure that you have all the proper insurance for handling a move. You will have a lot of possessions in a truck so if you need to supplement your insurance to better protect yourself in case of emergencies, you need to figure it out BEFORE you begin the move. It could be that your homeowners’ insurance covers it, or you might be able to supplement what you need when you rent your truck: be aware of all your requirements and responsibilities for every mile.
• Pads, Tie-downs and Packing Materials: Have you figured out how many boxes and what size of them you need? How much bubble wrap and other packing paper/tape/etc.? You will also want to make sure you have straps that ratchet for tying down larger items in the back of the truck. A couch or other heavy item may have a tendency to move around a bit while you are traveling, so tying it to the wall of the truck will help you secure your items safely. Don’t rely on boxes alone to keep the packed items in place – that is not always going to be your best option.
As you can see, even some of the most basic things can have a pretty dramatic effect on the cost of your move. Moving from metro Atlanta is easy with Georgia Home Movers – we are licensed and fully insured, and our teams of experts are kind, compassionate and experienced, ready to help you get wherever you need to go.
